CHAPTER THIRTEEN

C.J. stared at the photo on the front of Star News inside the General Store. Tracen and Emily looked perfect together. Even if he was over a whole foot taller. But that made their story sweeter. God had brought them together despite their differences.

A week ago she would have hated looking at the photo of such a happy couple. But not today. Today it gave her hope. Plus, a little bit of pride because she’d written the story. She grabbed a copy.

Now she had an excuse to see Sam. She just needed to find him. She purchased the magazine and paused to text him before stepping outside into the cold.

I have something for you

Her heart did a happy dance while she waited for his answer. Her phone buzzed.

A new ankle?

Her toes curled in delight at the silly response. Hopefully he wasn’t in too much pain.

Sorry, the General Stores is out of new ankles.

Figures. I’ll settle for an ice cream sandwich then. Or are they out of those too?

C.J. frowned at her watch. Had she slept in later than she thought? She’d been sleeping pretty well lately. But nope.

It’s only 9 A.M.

Your point?

She shook her head in amusement. What had she expected besides the fact that he would make her smile? She’d pick him up a couple of ice cream sandwiches, as well, to make him smile in return.

Are you going to be in town today so I can give you your ice cream?

She stepped out of the way of a group of ski bums buying hand warmers as she waited for the buzz signaling his answer.

You really got me ice cream??? You are so sweet. And cool, like ice cream.

She lifted her eyebrows at the compliment that probably didn’t come any higher with him. If that was the way to this man’s heart . . .

Ice cream and a surprise.

C.J. made her way to the tiny freezer section.

I’m watching kids this morning, but I can come with Emily to base camp this afternoon. She has some interview thingy.

Disappointment stopped her in her tracks. If Sam wasn’t coming for a few hours, she’d buy the ice cream later. She didn’t want to wait to see him, but it was probably best this way. With more time to focus on her job, she’d head to the Filmmaker’s Lodge and look for directors to interview. Would she be lucky enough to run into festival founder Robert Redford and get another cover story? Ha. One cover story and she started getting delusions of grandeur.

She punched in her message. I’ll meet you there.

Looking forward to it.

C.J. stared at her cell phone. Was he looking forward to it as much as she was? Or was she setting herself up to get her heart broken again?

She’d tried to stay away. She’d warned him she was a mess. She’d refused to date him. And yet here she was, sending texts like a smitten sixteen-year-old.

But he’d texted back. He was looking forward to seeing her later. And he was a good man.
